Stop press: London divers meet Dahab's Mayor

The London Region of the British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC) has paid tribute to the victims of the London bombing by adopting the Red Sea town of Dahab.

Dahab was subject to terrorist attack with three synchronised bombings earlier this year. Many of the victims were given emergency first aid at the scene of the blasts by scuba diving instructors, as divers were the people on the spot who had training in first aid.

"It's very much in the spirit of Londoners that we remember our own tragic events and the honour the victims by striving to achieve something positive. In remembering the events of 7 July, London divers wish to make a gesture of friendship and support to Dahab - a small town on the Red Sea with a large diving community that recently suffered terrorist bombings." Explained Roy Sherwin, Chair of London Region BSAC

The following leaflet is being issued by London Region and explains the initiative:

July 7 2005 terrorist bombs killed 52 people in the city of London and injured hundreds more.

April 24 2006 terrorist bombs killed 22 people in the small town of Dahab, Egypt and injured 150

Dahab is a small, friendly town in Sinai, on the Egyptian Red Sea. Residents make their livelihood from tourists - mostly from scuba divers and people learning to dive.

After the London bombings in July 2005 Londoners continued with their daily routine, refusing to be intimidated by acts of terrorism. London has a population of almost 7.5 million and its culturally diverse citizens are protective of its freedoms.

The loss of life and damage in Dahab has resulted in a drop in tourism upon which local businesses depend for their livelihood. It is in the interests of people in London and in Dahab to stand together against this modern threat.

We encourage all Londoners and all London divers, to continue visiting Egypt, the Red Sea, and our friends in the beautiful town of Dahab.

Divers from London Region will be visiting Dahab on 21 July with a plaque, and links are being made through the South Sinai Association of Divers.
